ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 details how to create and use characters for virtual production. Experts from Epic weigh in on artificial intelligence and smart digital extras, analyze how characters react to their virtual environment, as well as how AI-generated characters react to their physical environment. The reader is given a useful understanding of real-time AI and will learn how an AI agent perceives the world, decides what to do, and how it executes that decision. Situational trade-offs for using AI-generated characters are highlighted. Epic’s MetaHuman tool is explained in depth, including parametric, mesh to MetaHuman with artist-created mesh, and mesh to MetaHuman with 3D scan workflows. Special attention is given to the process of animating MetaHumans with motion capture, including facial and body rigs.
