ABSTRACT

The current challenges and limitations of shooting in an LED volume are discussed and dissected in Chapter 14. The importance of preparing the volume and an exploration of volume size, specifications, loads, artifacting, and camera language is examined in detail in order to provide the knowledge that will decide “Big” or “Small” and how to take advantage of what one gets regardless. Artifacting, a common issue in real-time and LED wall uses, is given particular attention, including an examination of the factors that cause moiré, banding, latency, and frame sync issues. A very technical overview of color gamut and color shift is provided in order that those who are interested in this level of detail can dive in, while for others, just the need to see what is involved by the tech crew is revealed, complete with informative diagrams and expert suggested best practices. Particular attention is given to preparation, team education, and ensuring everyone on the team is aligned and has the same goal when it comes to using the volume – something that is often overlooked with disastrous results.
