ABSTRACT

The virtual art department’s preparations for ICVFX are covered in Chapter 22 in clear detail. Getting the environment ready for the Cinematographer, lighting in the volume, preparing a virtual set for ICVFX, the pre-light, and noteworthy things to keep in mind when lighting for ICVFX are listed in an easy-to-understand format. The guiding wisdom of “always start with what’s real” manifests in demonstrating how real life lighting informs virtual production. This section covers ways to encourage integration between practical set pieces and the action in front of an LED wall and the artwork created for the LED volume, with particular attention paid to set design and lighting (involving off-camera and practical lighting fixtures, flares, and other strategies for realism); camera lens, angle, and placement; and multiple camera considerations. The importance of tech rehearsals is explained as a best practice, techniques to ensure seamless blending between the practical and virtual sets utilizing real-time compositing procedures is further explained.
