ABSTRACT

Various lighting types for virtual production are examined in Chapter 23. Industry-respected directors of photography provide their experience-based perspective, and one learns the importance of collaboration in a virtual production setting. The creativity of lighting is given special attention, with examples of how wardrobe and location can affect lighting. The reader will learn what a DP sees as the “Holy Grail” of lighting and how atmospheric elements and depth of field play into a project’s success. The chapter also covers lighting continuity considerations, offers tips with regard to using the LED wall as a direct reflection lighting tool, and the impact of LED wall spectrums on image quality. Throughout this chapter are diagrams covering how light behaves, how light is perceived, and technical illustrations covering photometry, colorimetry, and radiometry. On-set image-based lighting is given detailed treatment, covering terminology and essential concepts, workflow block diagrams, and touching on challenges that exist for any On-Set Image Based Lighting (OS IBL) setup. Traditional lighting control and how it integrates with virtual production for more precise lighting control is discussed, with particular attention paid to pixel mapping to create interactive lighting in virtual production.
