ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 covers visualization for virtual production. Definitions and project-specific examples of story visualization (storyvis), previsualization (previs), technical visualization (techvis) with and without motion control cameras, stunt visualization (stuntvis), and post visualization (postvis) are provided, as well as a vibrant discussion of the ways that augmented reality and virtual reality tools that can assist in the scouting process, on set, and for remote viewing. Using stunt visualization in Unreal Engine allows for explorative sessions with key creatives and department heads, while saving time and money depleted by practical rehearsals with cast and crew present. The benefits of using these techniques are many, including a certain flexibility to production, a cost-savings for remote work, safety for stunt performers, and the ability for the Director to view nearly completed shots as principal photography is happening, sometimes using Simulcam for real-time compositing.
