ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion of the evolution of hospital information systems. Over the years, healthcare information systems have expanded to include additional provider functionality such as order entry and clinical documentation. Modern HIS application modules comprise clinical systems, support services, supply chain systems, revenue cycle management, and financials. HIS also includes specialty applications such as cancer care, cardiology, anesthesiology, and surgical care. The ecosystem also supports a digital front door that patients can use to communicate with care providers and add or edit patient-generated health data and social determinants of health. The Healthcare Organizations EHR also receives digital data via patient-connected biomedical devices within the healthcare facility. Leading HCOs have developed unified portals with an intuitive user interface and site navigation protocols. In addition to medical information, these portals provide patients access to frequently needed services such re-ordering medications, scheduling appointments for onsite or virtual visits, secure email communication with providers, and bill payment.
