ABSTRACT

The pandemic highlighted telehealth platforms as key enablers of patient care by simplifying patient access while meeting isolation requirements. Telehealth platforms support multiple communication modalities such as secure email, SMS/text messaging, voice calls, and video calls that make it convenient for patients to engage with care providers. The adoption of telehealth platforms by HCOs was assisted by the congressional passage of public health emergency which relaxed federal and cross-state provider licensing requirements and enabled CMS and private payers to compensate care provision via telehealth modalities. Digital healthcare organizations continue to disrupt existing care models within their ecosystem by improving care efficiency and effectiveness. Continued transition to capitated payment models will increase the use of Digital Health Platforms (DHPs) to improve outcomes and lower costs. DHPs that provide well-designed and developed APIs to partners and third-party vendors attract complements for increased platform “intelligence” and value.
