ABSTRACT

Before the analysis of the Miller's Dance, it is necessary to know the story of the ballet and background facts. The ballet did not premiere in Spain but in London, England, on July 22, 1919. Ironically, it was performed at the Alhambra Theater, the same name of the Moorish castle in Granada that fascinated Massine. The analysis is based on the Paris Opera's more recent production of The Three-cornered Hat. Here the original choreography of the Miller's Dance is performed by Patrick Dupond. The original treasured black and white film of The Three-cornered Hat is difficult to observe because of poor quality due to age. But it is worth seeing for the film's historical value at the New York Library of Performing Arts with special permission from the Massine family. Spanish terminology of the steps is included in the analysis, and the Spanish steps are compared to similar ballet steps.
