ABSTRACT

The history of Russian ballet is critical because it helps us to understand the foundation of the Ballets Russes. The beginning of ballet in Russia will be compared and contrasted with flamenco. There is a commonality of fire and passion between Russians and Spanish. In 1697, Peter the Great toured Europe and brought back theatrical dance to Russia. The St. Petersburg Ballet School was formed in 1736 with dancers, teachers, and choreographers from France and Italy. Catherine the Great built two large theaters in Moscow and St. Petersburg for large-scale operas and ballet. By 1800, the Imperial Ballet of Russia emerged as an important company and by the end of the 19th century the greatest in the world.
