ABSTRACT

In the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes revolutionized ballet. Diaghilev was born in Russia in 1872, and he began his career organizing art exhibits. He wrote for his own magazine, The World of Art. Later he brought Russian opera to Paris and introduced ballet. When classical ballet became his sole interest, the Ballets Russes was born. The first performance was on May 19, 1909, in Paris. The Ballets Russes had no home or star system, resembling the pallbearers of flamenco. The company had a great impact on flamenco dance and transported it to a theatrical level, but flamenco would also enrich the Ballets Russes repertory in its brief exile Spain.
