ABSTRACT

The introduction presents the main question of the book as a theological investigation of the anthropological link between human capabilities and the preconditions for social progress. It seeks to justify the need for the interdisciplinary argument engaging social sciences with theology by asking the reader to entertain the notion that social sciences may not have been as successful and effective as may sometimes be imagined. Moreover, while social progress has been largely undeniable, it is not a given that the journey of progress is in any way fully under control. The chapter suggests, in line with the main motivation of this book, that this may be partly due to the incomplete understanding of human nature in social sciences, in particular their ignorance of the human condition and fallenness.
