ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the history of the World Meteorological Organization, or WMO. In it, the author discusses the origins of the WMO as an international organization that sets standards for the measurement and transmission of weather data across the world. Beginning in a small scientific conference in 1872, with a formal organization announced a year later, the WMO has operated through two global wars, and in 1950 became part of the United Nations. The chapter is concluded by a short interlude of weather anecdotes associated with the interplay of government and weather.
