ABSTRACT
This chapter covers the first WMO weather extremes investigation of a global extreme, the highest recorded twenty-four-hour precipitation recorded for the Western Hemisphere. This record was associated with the passage of Hurricane Wilma in 2005 over a small Mexican island. In it, the author discusses the multinational, ethnically diverse, gender-diverse and age-diverse composition of the WMO ad-hoc extremes evaluation committees. The chapter is concluded by a short interlude of a short story associated with the use of weather spies by the British during the so-called ‘Great Game’ in the 1800s.
