ABSTRACT

Despite their different experiences, there are common themes in the stories of gun violence survivors. The shooting becomes a clear line of demarcation in their lives. Though all survivors experience acute stress, not all go on to develop PTSD; one can view trauma responses on a continuum that is unique to every person. Trauma also ripples outward. Loved ones, helpers, and advocates can develop vicarious trauma in response. Anyone closely involved with a survivor of gun violence may be affected. They are also in need of supportive services. This chapter offers “Crisis Support” and “Ongoing Care” resources for survivors, their loved ones, and advocates. Psychological support is typically minimal or entirely lacking within the current piecemeal healthcare system. Many forms of additional self-help and supportive activities can be powerful and promote healing. However, these practices must be led by those who are trauma-informed.
