ABSTRACT

Shot in an armed robbery, Kevin Neary was left wondering if his life was worth living. Multiple operations later—more than he can count—he has concluded that it is. Now, Kevin sees that his physical limitations do not define him. He also understands that he would not be where he is now without the love and support of his family. The damage Kevin sustained physically has left him in need of 24-hour care in the ten years since he was shot. Mostly, this care has been provided by his family members. Kevin’s story illustrates how the power of an attuned, loving, and dedicated family and excellent rehab care has kept Kevin psychologically well. Just as trauma can shape our brains, it can constantly be reshaped by new experiences and relationships. Positive relationships centered on empathy are the foundation of healing.
