ABSTRACT

It’s in our nature to desire a comprehensible linear narrative about our lives, with clear cause and effect to explain the events that occur. It helps us make sense of the world, and when the world makes sense, we believe we know how to avoid danger. But when it comes to mass shootings, the event never makes sense from the victim’s perspective. Though most of us will never experience a mass shooting directly, we are all affected indirectly every time one occurs. Mass shootings have changed how we move through the world and caused collective reverberations of trauma in our society.
