ABSTRACT
Imagine a post-scarcity utopia. 1 Every single inhabitant of this utopia can have more or less whatever they want, whenever they want it. All the work, including household chores, is automated and done by machines. Powerful and benevolent artificial intelligences (AIs) take care of the administrative tasks of detecting needs and deputizing machines to take care of them. Technological advances in nanotechnology and fabrication ensure that any material object can be produced to precise specifications, and is available to anyone and everyone. As a result, there is no need for anyone to perform work in our ordinary sense; the machines and fabricators take care of all that.
