ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the relevance of Clean Language for working with neurodivergent coachees – an approach used in therapy, research interviewing, coaching and group facilitation. This technique is incredibly powerful and well designed for neurodivergent people on account of making few assumptions and holding an extremely non-judgemental stance. Clean Language transforms how ‘heard’ a coachee feels and is a direct route to developing metacognition and self-awareness. The basic language and questioning models used in coaching are described, including tips and modifications for use with neurodivergent coachees and coachee stories to illustrate what happens in practice. The chapter closes with a description of using everyday Clean Language in group coaching exercises and pointers to inform coaches’ reflective practice.
