ABSTRACT

The Local Government Finance Act 1982 created the Audit Commission. The Commission has 15 members appointed by the government being drawn from industry, local government and trade unions. The Audit Commission appoints auditors to inspect the accounts of local authorities, including police authorities. Using the outlines, individual forces devise their own performance specifications that take into account its own particular circumstances. However, all forces follow broadly similar measurements for their own individual performance indicators. The standards attained by police forces are monitored by the Audit Commission, who, at the end of each year publishes Local Authority Performance Indicators: Police. This publication provides tables illustrating the comparative performance of all English and Welsh Forces. Several support and advisory papers have been published by the Audit Commission since 1988 covering a variety of police activities. They are produced following in-depth reviews in representative police forces.
