ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the critical leadership challenges faced by group counselors as well as the skills they need to navigate those challenges successfully. An overarching theoretical frame concerning the dialectical view of group leadership is discussed which reflects the ongoing process of self-regulation that a group leader must be able to model. The four major dialectical challenges that a group counselor must navigate in order to lead a group successfully are presented. These dialectical challenges are presented as a kind of map of the river, a kind of description of the rapids that group counselors tend to face in their work, and how we can make our way through these challenges successfully.
