ABSTRACT

Landscaping for thermal comfort improves the livability of urban areas. It regulates temperatures using vegetation, materials and amenities, not electricity or fossil fuels. Providing comfort naturally will reduce dependence on industrial energy, lower harmful emissions, preserve the ozone layer, protect air quality, and ultimately improve public health. This chapter is divided into three sections: The six strategies of cooling, the six techniques for warming, and important discussions about the big costs of maintaining landscapes that provide comfort naturally. This chapter also includes common nomenclature, many plant lists, and educational images.
