ABSTRACT

Urban trees can do more than cool communities, enhance public wellbeing, and protect waterbodies, they can also produce lumber at the end of their useful life. Large properties, such as regional parks, are ideally suited for timber production. Included in this chapter are the two types of timber production (salvage and intentional), the pros and cons of each system, the design guides for a sustainable and intentional harvest, a list with over 60 valuable timber trees, and the maintenance strategies that ensure straight trunks with high value.
