ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I discuss the amazing strategy of using an “accent” when reading in class. This may be outside of the comfort zone for some teachers who are self-conscious; however, the ultimate goal is to make students feel safe when reading. When a student takes on an accent, it has the same effect as when they read another student's work rather than their own. The silly accent removes them from the skill of reading and gives them something to hide behind should they stumble. When the class is laughing at their accent, then the reading errors are not being laughed at.
