ABSTRACT

Brain breaks were a catch phrase years ago, and, though implemented for a brief period of time, they quickly were dismissed as a waste of instructional time. Quality over quantity must be the rule by which we measure our instruction. If students are not engaged, then you need to be able to read the room and implement a break with movement or critical thinking to help students get their focus back. This is not a waste of time or a game you must entertain; rather, it is a necessity for them to retain the material that you are teaching. Especially when it comes to males at the secondary level, movement can be the element that bridges the gap between their interest in the material and their being able to focus on it.
