ABSTRACT

The foundation of most lesson plans requires the teacher to create a moment at the beginning of the lesson that engages students, helps them anticipate the material, or relates the material to them in a personal way. It used to be referred to as “The Anticipatory Set” in the long-hand version of lesson plans. Today this step is often overlooked, yet it is arguably the most critical component of the lesson. Putting a student into the lesson, letting them personally experience the use of the material for a purpose creates connections that make the material functional, not just a means to an end. This style of teaching will allow the students to reflect on the experience, and experiential learning is often the most retained.
