ABSTRACT

Oftentimes teachers have the best intentions when they create an assessment. Unintentionally we can create a trap for students by grading something outside of the criteria of the skill. If you are grading a skill that asks for recall of definitions or facts, then something like taking points off for spelling is outside of that criterion. If you are grading for comprehension, then again, writing quality should not be on the table for analysis. Check yourself when assigning an assessment to make sure that you are truly grading the skill, and nothing else.
