ABSTRACT

Oftentimes there is a disconnect between teachers and the parents of students. Adults are often busy, and prioritizing relationship building with guardians can be an added task in a day full of never ending “to do” lists. Some guardians never have and never will feel comfortable inside of a classroom. In this chapter I discuss my own efforts to get out into the community and the effect it had on the way that my students’ guardians viewed me. Teachers are not known to be humble by the nature of their profession, so seeing a teacher roll up their sleeves and get to work within the community shows the real purpose that we teach – to help. This will go a long way.
