ABSTRACT

The awakening awareness of the linguistic colonization which still oppresses them has a strong alienating effect which could possibly create either a very aggressive attitude to the white world and its forms and cause them to curse like Caliban in the white man's language, or it could induce a high level of apathy and cynicism which would have a deadening effect on their consciousnesses both as individuals and nationals. ‘Identity’ itself, the feeling of belongingness, is the most necessary feeling that any individual needs in any society, but when a new nation is asserting her own newly-wrought independence as a new political entity, the notion of ‘Identity’ amongst its young people will have a special importance. Draft Resolution moved by Trinidad and Tobago Realising that the Universal Declaration of Human rights is a common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations.
