ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the typologies of global order; the unipolar, bipolar, and the multipolar orders, using Amitav Acharya’s “Multiplex World” theory to explain the future of global order. It concludes that re-constructing either a unipolar or bipolar order is no longer feasible, nor is it realistic. The conversation today is to figure out what sort of multipolar world order to design, one that will be acceptable to the triumvirates – U.S., China, and Russia. These uncertainties impact the work and future of the international criminal court. The court will struggle given the unstable rules-based order that inspired its establishment in 1998. The way forward is for the court to internally reform its processes, procedures, and effect amendments to the Rome Statute.
