ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates some of the main theoretical and practical issues which were raised in the last one, by describing examples of crime prevention projects in action. One of the main aims of recent government initiatives is to generate more crime prevention activity in forces and to encourage the growth of good practice based on careful monitoring of the results of those initiatives. In 1979, Northumbria Police received funds from the Inner City Partnership scheme to provide basic security fitments to every dwelling on two local authority housing estates. It was hypothesised that the improved security would reduce the incidence of burglary and help residents feel safer. The Felling scheme was monitored by the police and the Scotswood scheme by Newcastle-upon-Tyne Polytechnic. The Grange Project was set up by the Humberside Police in 1979 in response to the Ditchley circular which urged a coordinated approach to juvenile delinquency.
