ABSTRACT

Avocados are incredibly thirsty crops. To meet their water demands, large amounts of irrigation is required, even in regions with suitable climates and rainfall. Growing climate change pressure is driving even greater demand for irrigation. Exacerbating the situation is the fact that the most popular variety of avocado, the Hass, is particularly water intensive. Although water stress is primarily an environmental issue, it is also a social issue. Water stress is intrinsically linked to poverty, public health, conflict, and famine. Usually, it is the poorest and marginalised communities that bear the biggest burden.
