ABSTRACT

Avocados are considered to be a healthy food due to their blend of fats, minerals, and vitamins. For the most part, this is true and research has shown that it provides a good addition to a balanced diet. However, there were times when this was not considered the case, particularly in the 1990s when low-fat foods became the rage and avocado consumption declined dramatically. Marketing teams throughout the 20th century have aimed to promote the avocado and have used the image of the fruit as healthy to increase its popularity, labelling it a “superfood.” They have also tapped into the growing trend for “clean eating” to appeal to affluent consumers in the Global North and played off the reputation of the fruit as an aphrodisiac.
