ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 chronologically presents the Sarcheshmeh township’s development story during the three main periods. The first period (1968–1970) pertains to the presence of the British Selection Trust in Sarcheshmeh as the leading developer of the copper complex. During this period, the Iranian firm Abdol Aziz Farman-Farmaian and Associates was nominated as the local architect to collaborate with Selection Trust’s Engineering Division in the township’s design. During the second period, a short-lived copper consortium created between Japan, Britain, and France at Sarcheshmeh coincided with the employment of a French architectural firm, Marc Le Caisne and Partners, that was selected to revise the previous design. The last section examines the period from 1972 until 1979, when the Iranian government accepted the United States’ assistance by employing the entire personnel of Anaconda. During this period, the town was built under the extensive influence of the American modernist style of post-war building, which advanced principles of prefabrication and flexibility in architecture. Concurrent with the American national program of Operation Breakthrough, which aimed to introduce 22 companies’ models of the most innovative prefabricated housing systems, the American General Electric Company, through its collaboration with the local contractors, implemented its Breakthrough system in Sarcheshmeh township as well.
