ABSTRACT

About 40 percent of successful no-body homicides are between intimate partners; twice the proportion for homicides in general. Even when a prosecution is successful, these cases often take a long time for police to solve. This chapter contrasts five cases where more than three decades separated disappearance from arrest with cases that were quickly cleared by police. It is argued that intimate partner killers usually control the crime scene, making body disposal possible. The killers often control the timing of a missing person’s report which complicates police investigations.
