ABSTRACT

This chapter asks the reader to consider the future implications of drones, which human values they are likely to uphold and which they are likely to suppress, and – more broadly – what type of world we want to create in the future. The chapter provides insights into some of the barriers that limit value-sensitive drone design, including organizational constraints and paradigms within engineering. It continues with recommendations for drone engineers, drone companies, social scientists, ethicists, lawmakers, and citizens to support the development of ethically informed and value-sensitive drone technologies. The chapter concludes by reiterating that “the good drone” and “the evil drone” narratives are over-simplifications, and that drone design is complicated and multifaceted but suggests that the approaches detailed in the book can create better technologies.
