We’ve arrived at one of the big ones: EQ. Before we get into what EQ is, why it’s so helpful, and how to use it, it’s essential to clarify that you shouldn’t jump straight in at this point. If you skipped through the first two units to get to the meaty stuff, go back and do those first. EQ is a beautiful tool and will help shape a lot of your mix’s clarity and character. The way to get the most out of your EQ is to balance and pan your mix thoughtfully first. If your mix isn’t well balanced, then any EQ alterations you make will be from an uninformed position. So, you won’t be able to gauge properly whether the EQ changes you’re making are genuinely making a positive contribution to your mix or not.
