ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter explains this book's main aim: to provide an historical overview of the main Spanish film policies carried out by the Spanish state between 1980 and 2010 and to assess how far and in what ways these policies have contributed to tackle the structural gender inequality of the Spanish film industry. This chapter first starts by explaining the relevance of studying film policies through a gender lens – this is to say, the importance of purging androcentrism from film policy analysis. As a book embedded in the feminist film scholarship, this study faces several methodological issues that are explained in this introduction. Finally, this introduction details the book's structure and content.
