ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the methods used for two studies that explored the use of Grammarly, an automated writing evaluation tool, in research paper revision. One study was composed of a system-centric evaluation and a user-centric evaluation of Grammarly. It was based on a randomized control trial, with a variant of a crossover design (i.e., a design in which only the treatment group students used Grammarly for revising Draft 1 of the Introduction section of their research papers but both the treatment group and the control group students used it for revising Draft 2). The other study examined student engagement with Grammarly use and factors contributing to their engagement, based on screen recording, stimulated recalls, and semi-structured interviews. This chapter covers the context, data collection, data coding, and data analysis of the two studies.
