ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the results of an investigation into the effectiveness of Grammarly use in improving the linguistic accuracy of research papers. Both the error-correction success ratios and the regression analysis results indicate that Grammarly use had a positive effect on error correction in research paper revision. The treatment group outperformed the control group in error correction in the first round of revision, when only the treatment group used Grammarly; however, the control group slightly outperformed the treatment group after the second round of revision, when both groups could use Grammarly. The results support the positive effects of Grammarly use in research paper revision and suggest that it might be more productive to revise by oneself before revising with Grammarly than to revise with Grammarly all along. In addition, the treatment effects varied across different feedback qualities.
