ABSTRACT
This chapter provides the motivation for the book: to counter the argument that we need to maintain population growth, by natural growth or immigration surplus, for continued welfare growth. It presents the central thesis of this book: in a densely populated country as the Netherlands, the benefits of immigration do not surpass the cost of increasing population density. The chapters to back up this claim are outlined.
