ABSTRACT

The battle for land has now reached crisis characteristics. Shortage of housing, pressure to reduce the ecological damage of agriculture and perhaps reduce the scale of the farming industry, violations of EU rules on protecting nature and continued high levels of immigration provide challenges to the body politic that so far seem hard to solve. Four broad policy options are discussed: increase land, reduce population, reduce space intensity of activities and adjust the structure of production. Immigration policy to solve problems of labour market shortages and the great demographic transition is not promoted.
