ABSTRACT

Abu Zayd is tasked with clearing the possessions from an elite residence near Córdoba, named Rusafa that was the site of a famous attempt at human flight by Ibn Firnas. He enlists al-Harith, Salim and Aisha to help him in sorting out the possessions of Subh, consort of caliph al-Hakam II. They discover an ivory pyxis given to Subh to celebrate the birth of ʿAbd al-Rahman. While they are discussing its inscriptions and meaning, Subh arrives at Rusafa. She takes back the pyxis and inspects their remaining work.
