ABSTRACT

Aisha, al-Harith and Salim pursue a hooded man who has purchased a package from a merchant in Tripoli. They corner the man, who reveals himself to be Abu Zayd. The package is shown to contain a rock crystal ewer that originally belonged to the tenth-century Fatimid caliph, al-ʿAziz B'illah. They discuss the function and meaning of the ewer, before Abu Zayd reveals his plan to sell the vessel to a Venetian trader. Abu Zayd makes his escape as an earthquake hits the port.
