ABSTRACT

Salim recounts an evening in which the assembled guests recite poetry. The host challenges al-Harith, Abu Zayd, and his other guests to identify the story depicted on a glazed stonepaste beaker decorated in the minaʾi style with three rows of narrative images. Attempts are made to link these to various famous Persian stories before Abu Zayd successfully decodes the cycle of images as coming from the story of Bihzan and Manizha in the famous Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Firdawsi.
