ABSTRACT

Aisha is tasked with helping Abu Zayd, a retired janissary, to catalogue his collection of manuscript pages, drawings, and prints. He discusses some of these and then recalls his involvement in the building of the Banya Bashi mosque in Sofia. He talks about the ways in which designs created by Mimar Sinan were transferred around the empire. In the last part of the chapter Aisha asks him questions about a Venetian print of the Ottoman sultan Süleyman I that shows him wearing an elaborate hat.
