ABSTRACT

Al-Harith, Salim and Aisha travel to Poland with their translator, Abu Zayd. They meet with Gregorovius, who in his earlier life had been sent as an emissary to the Ottoman court in Istanbul. They attempt to sell him silk velvet textiles, but he shows little interest in these items. He, however, glimpses a set of matching cotton goods, comprising trousers, boots, a belt and a cap. He leaves and returns wearing an Ottoman robe of honour (hilʾat) that matches the cotton goods and then recounts his visit to the vizier of the sultan.
