ABSTRACT

Abu Zayd has a conversation about the legitimacy of images with a religious scholar in Lahore. They enter the Wazir Khan mosque complex and discuss the floral decoration and the inscriptions that cover the walls. The religious scholar shows Abu Zayd a shell inscribed with Qurʾanic verses. He is in the habit of drinking water from this object, drawing spiritual protection from the lettering applied to its interior. Abu Zayd challenges him about whether this is a form of magic.
