ABSTRACT

Aisha visits a fountain in Nafplio and meets the owner of a nearby tobacconist. He identifies himself as Nikos, but explains that he converted from Islam to Christianity during the Greek War of Independence. He talks about his grandfather who was a Janissary and a member of the Bektashi order. He describes this religious sect and notes that his grandfather commissioned the fountain as an act of charity (zakat). Nikos recommends that Aisha, al-Harith, and Salim leave the town as soon as possible due to the instability caused by the assassination of the Greek prime minister, Kapodistrias.
