ABSTRACT

Al-Harith visits a mint to order a batch of copper coins. He and Aisha hear from the master of the mint about the close connections between Byzantine coins and those made during the reign of caliph Muʿawiya. The master shows them a new gold coin carrying the image of caliph ʿAbd al-Malik. The dye cutter, Abu Zayd, shows them a new copper coin, based on the gold prototype, and explains the meanings communicated by the additional elements of his design.
