ABSTRACT

This chapter describes design as both science and art, and then provides theory and principles for key event applications. Event design has evolved from a focus on form, to problem-solving, to strategy, with strategic design having implications for the planning of event portfolios and events as agents of change. An important question that is addressed is “can experiences be designed?” The answer is provided by examining theories pertaining to environmental influences, sensory stimulation, creativity and innovation, dramaturgy, theatre, and co-creation. An expert opinion by Steve Brown provides a personal view of festival design. Specific design principles are presented for event settings, from indoor venues to nature. Theming and programming are explored, then the design of services. The final section of this chapter considers how satisfaction and quality can be evaluated from the guest, participant, or customer’s perspective.
